Journalism just isn’t what it used to be. Unfortunately, most of today’s journalists are people who care more about conveying a certain idea or agenda than about investigating and making sure that they are reporting the truth.
One of these so-called “journalists” that doesn’t care very much about facts is none other than “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt, who was recently fooled by North Korean propagandists even though it was blatantly obvious that the regime had staged the scene Holt was reporting from.
Specifically, Lester Holt was providing commentary from the Masikryong ski resort in North Korea, explaining that the resort is a “source of immense pride for a country trying to present a new and modern face to the world.” As he spoke, dozens of skiers are seen behind him waiting in line for the chairlift and skiing down the mountain, which would be a normal sight had Holt been reporting from somewhere within the United States of another capitalist society, but not in North Korea.
As it turned out, the ski resort that Lester Holt was reporting from is known to actually be a ghost town, and the North Korean regime intentionally staged the skiers to make it appear as though they were an advanced and prosperous nation. This should have been obvious to Holt and his crew, especially considering the fact that most of the skiers were wearing identical outfits. But instead of putting two and two together, Holt continued to speak highly of North Korea, explaining that the ski resort is a place that “most Americans don’t see,” but that the regime “would like us to see.”
In the end, Holt made a complete fool of himself, and his own colleagues didn’t hesitate to call him out. “Who produced this garbage?” asked one NBC insider. “It is field producing 101 – don’t do a standup somewhere that’s been staged by a dictatorial regime.”
Of course, there is still the very real possibility that Lester Holt and his team knew that North Korea was staging the scene at Masikryong ski resort (or at least had an idea), but went along with it anyway in order to paint North Korea in a good light, and to discretely show the world that Donald Trump is some kind of evil warmonger who wants to bring war to this “prosperous” nation. In this way, perhaps Lester Holt was a part of the propaganda rather than a victim of it.
This theory becomes even less far-fetched when you consider the fact that in recent months, the left wing media has taken on a rather sympathetic tone towards the North Korean regime. Last September, when President Trump announced that the United States will “totally destroy North Korea” if it becomes hostile with our own country or our allies, many on the left condemned him and sided with the totalitarian regime. (Related: North Korea can now kill off 90% of the U.S. population with a single warhead.)
“There were gasps in the hall: A forum for peace was used to threaten to annihilate a nation of 25 million people,” wrote New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. His colleague Gail Collins wrote that the “big takeaway” of President Trump’s addresses to the United Nations was “that the president of the United States had threatened to destroy a country with 25 million people.”
USA Today called the remarks made by Trump “unsettling,” and ABC anchor Terry Moran argued that his pledge to retaliate if provoked “borders on the threat of committing a war crime.” (Related: An intelligence insider has warned that war with North Korea is likely within weeks.)
The North Korean regime is horrible, but in the minds of many leftists, President Trump is even more so. Therefore, if they have to take on a sympathetic tone when speaking about North Korea or paint them in a good light to make Trump “the warmonger” look bad, then they will do just that.
