Mainstream media outlets in the United States may have “greenlit” a possible assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump due to fears that he may win next year’s presidential election.
This comes after the Washington Post published an opinion piece from contributing editor Robert Kagan titled “A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending.”
Political commentator Lisa Haven, on her program “Restricted Republic,” noted that the implication with the title is that, if Trump wins a second term, his administration would be disastrous and possibly even deadly for the American people, hence violence against the former president would be justifiable.
“In a roundabout way, this could lead people to do something really bad to Donald Trump, say, assassinate him,” warned Haven. “And I’m really afraid for his life… Tucker Carlson says he fears for Trump’s life. We’re speeding toward assassination.”
Haven and Carlson are not alone. Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida took to social media to criticize the Washington Post opinion piece, warning that the mainstream media is “obviously greenlighting assassination.”
Gaetz also made sure people noticed the image that accompanied the opinion piece: A split picture with the top being the head of a statue of Roman dictator Julius Caesar – who was assassinated – and the bottom being Trump’s face.
“There’s not going to be a dictatorship,” remarked Haven. “There wasn’t a dictatorship the first time. I don’t believe it’s going to happen the next time. He’s going to get into office – if he makes it – and he is going to do things, hopefully, better than he did the first time.” (Related: Roger Stone was right: The same Deep State behind the assassination of JFK is attempting to take down Trump.)
Throughout his political career, Trump has faced multiple assassination attempts, some of them very serious.
In 2016, when Trump was still a candidate and the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party, while he was at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, British national Michael Steven Sandford tried to steal a firearm from a police officer. Sandford later said during interrogation that he intended to use the stolen firearm to shoot and kill Trump, fully expecting that he would be shot and killed by law enforcement as a result. He was sentenced to a year in prison before being deported back to the United Kingdom.
While in office, Trump faced three assassination attempts. In 2018, Gregory Lee Leingang of North Dakota pleaded guilty to planning to flip Trump’s limousine with a stolen forklift during a presidential visit to the state a year earlier. But the forklift got stuck, and Leingang attempted to flee on foot. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with additional time served for unrelated offenses.
Both of the remaining two assassination attempts happened through the mail. In 2018, William Clyde Allen III mailed letters laced with the biotoxin ricin to Trump and the Pentagon. All letters were intercepted, and Allen was indicted.
Finally, in 2020, Canadian citizen Pascale Ferrier was arrested for attempting to cross the U.S.-Canada border with a firearm. Before attempting the border crossing, she also tried to mail a letter laced with ricin to the White House.
