A senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official has reportedly warned U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) of at least five assassination teams being mounted targeting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
In a post on X, where Gaetz shared an interview he had on Breitbart News Daily, he said: “We are aware of at least five teams in [the] country that are geared toward killing Trump. Three of them are foreign in nature – involving Iranians, Ukrainians and Pakistanis – while two of them are domestic in nature. That calls for force protection that we do not have around the former president right now.”
According to the lawmaker, the DHS official told him they were concerned that the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) was not providing sufficient support.
When asked why those teams were preparing liquidation attempts, the congressman told the host that the people who entered the country from the borders were not sufficiently scrutinized “to stop them from doing so.”
“In the world in which we live with an open border and insufficient resources to stop people from coming here from other places to do harm, this is the threat level we have to confront.”
He also lamented how they observed the insufficient protective detail provided for Trump. “We’ve seen a few times where resources have been pulled off of the Trump detail for the Joe Biden or John Bolton detail,” he said.
Over the last two months, Trump has survived two assassination attempts. The Republican presidential candidate narrowly avoided death at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July, when a bullet fired from around 150 meters away by Thomas Matthew Crooks grazed his ear. The gunman fired from a rooftop that had inexplicably been left unprotected by the Secret Service. The incident left one attendee dead and injured two others before the gunman was shot dead by a sniper.
The second attempt happened at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15. Secret Service agents saw a gunman aiming at Trump from behind bushes. The suspect was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, who unsuccessfully attempted to join the Ukrainian military in 2022. (Related: Second would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh was earlier praised by media for volunteering to fight for Zelensky in Ukraine.)
According to a media analysis, much of the news coverage on Trump still focuses on the negative aspects of his campaign despite two unsuccessful liquidation attempts.
The report said that analysts at the Media Research Center (MRC) reviewed 69 minutes of campaign coverage on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts between Sept. 15 and 17. It was observed that the thwarted assassination efforts took up 70 percent of all campaign news on the networks, a significant amount of that coverage was negative toward Trump.
“Over the three nights, we tallied 21 evaluative comments about the GOP candidate, 20 of which were negative, which computes to a 95 percent negative spin score,” the MRC reported. It also reported that out of 48 minutes of coverage of the liquidation attempt, the “three networks spent less than two minutes (1 minute, 53 seconds) on the possibility that Democrats could share the blame.”
NBC News anchor Lester Holt was even able to link Trump’s claim about the migrants in Ohio eating pets with the attempted assassination against the ex-POTUS.
“Today’s apparent assassination attempt comes amid increasingly fierce rhetoric on the campaign trail itself. Mr. Trump and his running mate JD Vance continued to make baseless claims about Haitian immigrants in Ohio,” Holt said.
The MRC also noted that CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell rejected Trump’s argument and put the onus on him. “Donald Trump is blaming Democrats for inflaming political rhetoric, but the former president’s own words seem to be increasing the threat of political violence in Springfield, Ohio. That’s where a false and ugly accusation against Haitians, thousands of whom are legal permanent residents, is impacting everyday life,” she said.
